Energy Efficiency

While our energy future must consider both supply side and demand side practices and technologies to meet our energy needs at lower costs to our bottom line and our environment, reducing demand through energy efficiency is the best place to start.

Insulating our buildings, installing energy efficient windows (or just caulking around the windows we have) and redesigning our buildings, products and processes to conserve energy all lead to lower energy bills and a cleaner environment.

Key Questions:

  • How many negawatts (a unit of energy saved) can your business generate this year?
  • Does your business have a strategy to deal with future volatility energy price and supply?
  • How are you reducing your transporation costs?

First Steps

  • Review energy costs for last 3 years to look for trends and opportunities to improve
  • Have your building commissioned or an energy audit completed
  • Don't forget to track your transportation energy costs and develop plans to reduce

Next Steps

  • Implement no or low cost energy saving opportunities
  • Create a 5 year investment plan to reduce energy costs

Bold Steps

  • Set a BHAG (BIg Hairy Audicious Goal)
  • Example 50% energy reduction by 2020 or Carbon Neutral by 2020
