East Siders losing green contest despite man`s 16-mile commute on foot The Cleveland Foundation, trying to be more environmentally friendly, has a competition among employees this month to shrink their carbon footprints. The competition (winners get a day`s vacation) pits East Siders against West Siders, awarding points for carpooling, taking public transportation and walking.
So it`s no surprise that public-relations staffer Scott Tennant decided he would walk to work one day recently. Except when you consider that he works downtown and lives in Wickliffe. That`s not even in the same county. Tennant left business clothes at work the night before and headed out for his 16-mile pedestrian commute at 5:30 a.m. He got to the office at 9:08 a.m. "I`ve got five kids. Three-and-a-half hours of me and the iPod was the best thing," he said. His boss, Cindy Schulz, a member of the opposing West Side team, joked: "He was eight minutes late for work, but I cut him a break." Despite Tennant`s heroic effort, it appears the West Siders are going to win. © The Plain Dealer
