The Cleveland Foundation, trying to be more environmentally friendly, has a competition among employees this month to shrink their carbon footprints. The competition (winners get a day`s vacation) pits East Siders against West Siders, awarding points for carpooling, taking public transportation and walking.

So it`s no surprise that public-relations staffer Scott Tennant decided he would walk to work one day recently. Except when you consider that he works downtown and lives in Wickliffe. That`s not even in the same county. Tennant left business clothes at work the night before and headed out for his 16-mile pedestrian commute at 5:30 a.m. He got to the office at 9:08 a.m. "I`ve got five kids. Three-and-a-half hours of me and the iPod was the best thing," he said. His boss, Cindy Schulz, a member of the opposing West Side team, joked: "He was eight minutes late for work, but I cut him a break." Despite Tennant`s heroic effort, it appears the West Siders are going to win.

Reflection

In the end, the question is not "How do we use nature to serve our interests?" It is "How can we use humans to serve nature's interest?"
