E4S is grateful to its sponsors for this special E4S Third Tuesday Network Event. Paul Murray, the leader of sustainability implementation at Herman Miller, Inc. will be the featured presenter at the E4S Knowledge Network National Speaker Series on Tuesday, May 15th from 5:30-8:30pm. The program will be held at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in University Circle. Based in Holland Michigan, Herman Miller is recognized worldwide as an innovator in workplace research and product development and is known for such signature pieces such as the Aeron work chair and the Resolve furniture system. In addition to numerous state and national EPA awards garnered over the years, Herman Miller’s leadership position in corporate social responsibility and environmental practices was again recognized this year by FORTUNE magazine as the “Most Admired Company” in its category for the 19th year.
Under the theme Back Your BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal*), the May 15th program centers on the challenge offered in January by E4S to the region’s manufacturers, institutions, and corporations to establish bold goals to increase energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions, and use renewable energy. Says Holly Harlan, Founder and President of E4S, “Bold goals inspire innovation and risk taking that can create the change we want to see in our businesses and our community. Paul Murray will share with us how Herman Miller is driving change and seizing the advantages emerging from sustainability-based commerce.”
In November 2004, the board of directors of Herman Miller declared their own BHAG by approving Perfect Vision 2020, a slate of innovative business strategies. The vision calls for achieving such milestones as using 100 percent green energy, emitting zero pounds of air emissions, sending zero pounds of waste to landfills, and achieving a minimum certification of Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) on all corporate facility construction and renovation efforts. In addition to recapping the progress of Perfect Vision 2020, Mr. Murray will discuss the impact that setting bold goals around sustainability principles has had on the employee culture and communities of Herman Miller and their shareholders and customers.
