~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Steve Taylor Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How
has the nominee implemented sustainable business practices in his or
her business or organization and what are the triple bottom line
benefits (people, planet, prosperity) of the nominee`s work? Steve Taylor, Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, embraces
sustainable business practices at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in many
areas, including green building and design. African Elephant Crossing
is on track to open in spring 2011 as one the first LEED certified
outdoor animal exhibits in the nation. The project will be built using
primarily recycled, environmentally preferable and regionally procured
materials. Its design will minimize water consumption by utilizing
water reclamation and filtration systems and decrease energy
consumption with the use of skylights. This state-of-the-art, five-acre
elephant habitat will provide on-site conservation programming and a
world-class breeding facility to help secure the future of this
impressive endangered species.
How does the nominee actively participate in the
sustainability community? How do they collaborate and share their
knowledge with others? Steve Taylor views conservation as “one and the same with the movement to stop global warming, sustain the earth, and protect natural resources.” He supports new sustainability practices throughout the Zoo’s day-to-day operations, and is committed to building conservation awareness throughout the greater community by engaging Zoo visitors. In addition, each spring the Zoo partners with the Earth Day Coalition for a save-the-planet learnathon. Steve has also added a new event to the Zoo’s calendar, America Recycles Day, to help encourage and educate the community about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle goods.
How has the nominee inspired you to implement sustainable business practices? Steve Taylor has been an inspiration to his staff by allowing employee-based participation and innovation when it comes to “greening” Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Steve has been very supportive of staff who help the Zoo achieve sustainability. The Zoo now employs a minimal-drive policy on Zoo grounds; it also has procured several hybrid vehicles, solar powered golf carts and a fleet of bikes for more sustainable Zoo transportation needs. The Zoo facilities department runs a successful composting program that sells out of their popular ZooPoo each season. All of these efforts have required a “green” thumbs-up from the Zoo Director.
How can someone else translate the
success of the nominee? Is the work of the nominee an example or model
that others can follow? Steve Taylor’s vision has placed Cleveland Metroparks Zoo at the forefront of sustainable organizations in the community. The new $25-million African Elephant Crossing exhibit is the latest example of such forward thinking and leadership. Steve is a true role model in implementing sustainable business practices for zoos and museums across the nation.
