Erin Huber and LeeAnn Westfall
Cleveland State University Green Rooftop Garden

The Nominator: Jim Story, Story Equipment Sales, Inc.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How has the nominee implemented sustainable business practices in his or her business or organization and what are the triple bottom line benefits (people, planet, prosperity) of the nominee`s work?
The benefits are widespread, the people on campus benefit from the peacefulness of the garden; the planet benefits as the garden helps with air quality; and CSU prospers from having a unique facility which will attract environmentally minded students.
How has the nominee inspired you to implement sustainable business practices?
Both Erin and LeeAnn immersed themselves into the rooftop project. The lessons they learned and the knowledge they shared with other students, will provide an involved base of environmentally active "Gen-X`ers". They will be/are the future of sustainability.
How can someone else translate the success of the nominee? Is the work of the nominee an example or model that others can follow?
They have inspired me in a couple of ways:
  • to learn more of the benefits of green rooftops, and see if we could adapt our product offerings and systems to be part of a roof project;
  • we all see so many examples of self-centered college age individuals in the media and wonder about the future of not only the sustainability movement, but the country. They showed me the determination of youth, and what happens when we turn our imagination into reality.
How does the nominee actively participate in the sustainability community? How do they collaborate and share their knowledge with others?
I think they used a classic problem solving format: identify the problem, need or desire; reduce it to the smallest elements; analyze each element; set realistic goals and time frames; start work; monitor progress and document the entire procedure.
Reflection
Using widely available energy-saving materials and equipment, most building managers can reduce their energy bills by at least 25% to 40% through basic weatherization, hot water savings, and a few other simple and cost-effective measures.
