Cal Kirchick
Ohio Bicycle Federation, Cleveland Bikes

The Nominator: Jim Sheehan, Ohio City Bicycle Co-Op

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How has the nominee implemented sustainable business practices in his or her business or organization?
Cal, besides being a dedicated bicycle commuter to his job as a lawyer at Baker Hostetler, was instrumental in the founding and incorporation of the local advocacy organization ClevelandBikes, and pivotal in drafting the language of HB 390 which became Better Bicycling in Ohio Act of 2006, with the Ohio Bicycle Federation.
What are the triple bottom line benefits (people, planet, prosperity) of the nominee`s work?
By fostering the creation of an organized voice for cyclists, and actually changing the laws that effect their use of the public roadways everyday, Cal improved not only the health and safety of existing cyclists, but also the chances of more people adopting what is undeniably the most efficient form of transportation. This work benefited the planet through reduced air and water pollution and conservation of energy and materials; and created prosperity through reduced congestion, land-use, and road wear, among the may other benefits of widespread cycling for transportation.
How has the nominee inspired you to implement sustainable business practices?
By demonstrating "...that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world..." by changing state law, inspires me to take more political action to achieve equitable treatment of all kinds of sustainable practices.
How can someone else translate the success of the nominee? Is the work of the nominee an example or model that others can follow?
The local bicycle advocacy group that Cal helped found, and the statewide advocacy group that he helped lead, both depend on the collective voices and efforts of citizens. Their successes belong to ordinary people with extraordinary commitment.
How does the nominee actively participate in the sustainability community? How do they collaborate and share their knowledge with others?
Cal passed away in 2008. His legacy to cyclists is enduring.
