 Dan Norris
Good Nature Organic Lawn Care

The Nominator: Alec McClennan, Good Nature

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How has the nominee implemented sustainable business practices in his or her business or organization?
Dan has pushed Good Nature to continue to search for and deliver alternatives to chemical treatments even though chemical solutions are usually the "easy" ones. He has also worked tirelessly at all hours (weekends, nights) to help the general population understand (one person at a time) why it may be better to have a few weeds in your lawn than to use a steady arsenal of chemicals to eradicate them.
What is the triple bottom line benefit (people, planet, prosperity) of the nominee`s work?
People who learn Dan`s message benefit by having fewer chemicals around their immediate family both in the yard and in the house (recent studies have shown that lawn chemicals have been found in a high percentage of carpet dust sampled). The planet benefits because there are fewer soluble nutrients and pesticides being put into our yards, water, and lakes, and ultimately we all depend on good clean water for survival.
How has the nominee inspired you to implement sustainable business practices?
Dan has gotten us to examine the way we go about our business on a day-to-day basis and helped us to become more sustainable. From recycling paper and fertilizer bags to using biofuels Dan has pushed us to always work to be more sustainable. Dan has also pushed us to explore other avenues that help peoples landscapes be more sustainable that aren`t exactly related to our current business but fit with our mission - installing low mow no mow grasses, planting rain gardens, and installing rain barrels.
How can someone else translate the success of the nominee? Is the work of the nominee an example or model that others can follow?
Dan has shown that doing little things and little bits everyday can add up to a lot over time. Dan has been instrumental in growing the number of people using organic lawn care and tree care services (most of whom switch from a chemical service) from under 100 to over 1800 in 6 years. Dan has shown that by focusing on short-term goals, you can achieve longer-term impactful results.
How does the nominee actively participate in the sustainability community? How do they collaborate and share their knowledge with others?
Dan is active in various groups and has helped plan events and conferences that spread the word about more sustainable ways to landscape. Recently, he worked with Ohio State University to help plan their Urban Landscape Ecology Program symposium, which brought speakers and landscape architects together from around the country to discuss how urban landscapes can be made more sustainable.
