I would like to nominate Doug Paige from the Cleveland Institute of Art as a 2004 Sustainability Champion. Doug has brought boundless energy and enthusiasm to projects that have connected the E4S community to CIA in ways that have enriched us all.
Our first project with Doug was the Sustainable Design Contest where CIA Industrial Design students were challenged to come up with new and innovative designs for school furniture using sustainable materials and manufacturing methods. In true entrepreneurial fashion Doug pushed the project forward even as there were a number of unanswered questions with regard to available resources and the ability of the partner organizations to support the effort. The outcome of the project was fabulous as the students raised a number of questions with regard to the meaning of sustainable design. They also produced beautiful, functional pieces that were tangible illustrations of sustainable design and whole systems thinking.
Oftentimes this movement is long on theory and short on implementation. Doug and his colleagues at CIA are exposing the next generation of the worlds leading designers to the concepts of sustainable design. As these students move on to careers in industry their effect on this movement will be enormous.
Currently we are working with Doug on commercializing one of the winning designs from the contest. Again, there are a lot of unanswered questions but Doug has been moving us forward, giving generously of his time and talents. He represents sustainability in action.
