BHAG`s

What is a BHAG?

"A BHAG (pronounced bee-hag, shorthand for “Big Hairy Audacious Goal”) is a 10-to-30-year objective — like a big mountain to climb — that serves as a unifying focal point of effort, galvanizing people and creating team spirit. It is crisp, compelling and easy to understand."

"A BHAG is based on a shared vision with thoughtful understanding, under a long term timeframe
and reflects the core values and core purpose of the declaring group."

What is the difference between a good BHAG and a bad BHAG?

"The difference between a good and a bad BHAG is that bad BHAGs are set with bravado; good BHAGs are set with understanding. Indeed, when you combine quiet understanding of the three circles with the audacity of a BHAG you get a powerful, almost magical mix."

Five criteria of a good BHAG:

  1. Are set with understanding, not bravado.
  2. Fit squarely in the three circles of your Hedgehog Concept.
  3. Have a long time frame—10 to 30 years.
  4. Are clear, compelling and easy to grasp.
  5. Directly reflect your core values and core purpose.

Does your organization have an energy BHAG? Post it on our online forum.

Reflection
There have been countless benefits to being a member of E4S. The largest benefit has been the contacts and connections with like minded individuals. E4S is a community of amazing people willing to share their talents, committed to supporting other sustainable businesses, and dedicated to a healthier planet for all. The E4S Third Tuesday Network Events have been an injection of adrenaline.
