Declare Your Energy BHAG in 2007
E4S Third Tuesday Network Event, Cleveland, OH January 16, 2007In January, E4S urged local businesses and institutions to set Energy BHAGs, Big Hairy Audacious [Energy] Goals (e.g. Herman Miller’s goal to use 100% Renewable Energy by 2020). A BHAG is a 10-20 year goal that serves as a unifying focal point of effort, inspiring innovation and galvanizing people. Can BHAG’s help Northeast Ohio put sustainability to work? What if every E4S member company had a BHAG?

Solar Thermal Water Heating Workshop
E4S/GEO/City of Cleveland Water Department Workshop January 31, 2007 Participants in this workshop learned how to put solar thermal hot water heating technology to work for their business. This half-day workshop included an overview of solar thermal technology, commercial applications, case stories, manufacturing economics, incentives and local resources.

Eat Your Way to a Healthy Economy: How Local Can You Go?
E4S Third Tuesday Network Event, Cleveland, OH February 20, 2007 .jpg) E4S and the Cuyahoga Valley Countryside Conservancy teamed-up to challenge Northeast Ohio businesses to take a Eat Local Challenge, by pledging to purchase 10% local food. Kari Moore presented seven things you can do in 2007 to localize your corporate food purchasing. Brad Masi explored local food’s impact climate change. The network also heard from Randy Demers, Regional Manager at Bon Appetit, who has purchased over $1 million in local food for the Oberlin College and CWRU dining programs in 2006.

Energy Efficiency Isn’t Sexy, But the Savings Are Real
E4S Third Tuesday Network Event, Cleveland, OH March 20, 2007 In March, the E4S Network heard from local business leaders who have found energy savings and learned about the tools and resources that can help them save too. Gene Mathews, facilities manager at CWRU and a regional leader in energy efficiency, presented his extraordinary efforts to reduce the university’s energy bill.

The (Future) State of Sustainability in Northeast Ohio

These were just some of the questions addressed by a panel of regional sustainability experts at this E4S event. These regional leaders conversed with each other and the network on the progress the region has made and the hurdles that still need to be overcome in order to build a regional sustainable economy.

National Knowledge Network Speaker Event Paul Murray of Herman Miller
At the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland, OH May 15, 2007 As the Director of Environmental Safety and Sustainability at one of the world’s most sustainable companies, Paul Murray knows a thing or two about BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals). At this E4S National Knowledge Network Event, Paul shared how Herman Miller’s BHAG, called “Perfect Vision 2020,” aims to eliminate all emissions and waste and use 100% renewable energy by 2020. Using the example of Herman Miller, Paul showed how setting bold goals could profoundly impact the culture of businesses and communities in Northeast Ohio by inspiring new levels of innovation.

Growing the Solar Industry in Cleveland+
E4S Third Tuesday Network Event, Cleveland, OH June 19, 2007One year after E4S and GEO launched the 1 Megawatt Solar Challenge, the E4S Network gathered to celebrate the year’s solar successes, including the Great Lakes Science Center solar array, the City of Cleveland’s fire station solar thermal hot water installation, the Cleveland Indian’s solar installation and the National Solar Conference that came to Cleveland in July 2007! Speakers also shared new opportunities for the PV and solar thermal industries in Northeast Ohio.

Growing the Healthy, High Performance Building Industry in Greater Akron
E4S Akron Network Event with Cleveland GBC, Akron, OH June 27, 2007In June the E4S Greater-Akron Network met at the Akron Zoo’s Komomdo Kingdom to connect with and learn from their peers to help grow the market for healthy high performance building. At this interactive roundtable session, participants explored the questions below and toured the Komodo Kingdom, only the third LEED certified Zoo building in the country.

After 14 years of serving the environmental and sustainability communities in our region, Jon became the Executive Director of the Park Foundation in Ithaca, NY.

E4S Joins with Green Energy Ohio to Advance the Solar Thermal Industry in Northeast Ohio
E4S Akron Network Event with GEO, Akron, OH November 29, 2007 Joining with GEO’s Northeast Ohio Clean Energy Network at Jennings Heating in Akron, the E4S network explored how we can build capacity for the growing solar thermal industry in Northeast Ohio. Participants learned the history and future of solar thermal technology, discussed potential applications for solar thermal technology for their sustainable business projects and ended the evening with a robust networking session.
