Nominated by: Heather Kuhn - Doty & Miller Architects

I`d like to nominate Bill Doty of Doty and Miller Architects for a Cleveland Sustainability Champion Award in the Building Category. Bill`s commitment to environmental issues can be seen in the retrofitting of his offices using the principles his firm espouses to his clients. Bill has been on the board of trustees for the Cleveland Green Building Coalition and Green Energy Ohio and on the a Advisory Boards for Entrepreneurs for Sustainability and Parkworks. In addition Bill is a past president of the Cleveland Earthday Coalition, showing that his commitment to the environment goes far beyond the building industry.

Under Bill`s direction Doty and Miller`s commitment to the environment has continued to grow. His firm now has six LEED accredited professionals on staff, giving them more accredited green Building professionals then any other firm in the state. In the past year Doty and Miller has completed 2 green buildings, their own offices and the Cleveland Environmental Center. In addition a third building The Geauga YMCA is nearing completion. All three of these buildings are applying for certification under LEED.

In addition community education is a central part of the firms philosophy. Bill regularly gives talks on Green Building to community groups. In October the firm hosted a full day class for teachers at the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center, providing information that can be integrated into their classes. In addition, planning is underway for a Solar Workshop to be held next spring in which volunteers will help install a building integrated PV system on Doty and Miller`s Office Building.

Bills commitment to the environment is evident in his personal and professional life. It is a central aspect of his business, he is truly a sustainability champion.

Nominated by: Melanie Kintner – Cleveland Green Building Coaltion

Bill’s dedication to sustainability goes back to his college days. He puts sustainability into practice daily. The recent green renovation of a post office in Bedford for the offices of Doty & Miller is a prime example. He gives of himself by sitting on the board of numerous environmental organizations, including the Cleveland Green Building Coalition. He recently served as an advisor to one of the top teams in the USGBC Emerging Green Builders design competition. Through his practice and his personal commitment he makes sustainability happen.

Nominated by: Scott Anderson – Doty & Miller Architects and Planners

I am nominating William Doty as a Champion of Sustainability. In addition to his personal commitment to sustainability, he has given countless hours to promoting sustainable concepts to the leaders of the business and political communities as well as the general public. (Attached is a list of boards and groups he has served).

More importantly, as an architect, Bill has made sustainability a reality in LEED registered buildings such as the Cleveland Environmental Center, the Geauga YMCA (to be completed in January 2005), and the proposed Lakewood YMCA. Additionally, Bill and his partner, Chuck Miller, have expressed their commitment to sustainability in their own LEED registered office in Bedford. A grant from the State of Ohio will allow Doty and Miller Architects to install building-integrated photovoltaics as a demonstration of the technology. Many more projects are "on the boards" for implementing green technology in businesses and homes.

Ultimately, sustainability is about people`s relationship to the world and each other. Bill and Chuck go out of their way to create a work environment and approach to business that is open and fair to employees, clients and associates.
